Broad Sanctuary
Broad Sanctuary is where the Westminster Hospital now stands, and is the site of the ancient Sanctuary of Westminster; in old times, any debtor or criminal who could get within the bounds of Sanctuary was for the time protected from arrest. Near here was set up the first printing. press ever used in England, by William Caxton, in the year 1474. |
