Charing Cross
Charing Cross Derives its name from the Cross erected here, then the village of Cherringe, about 1291, by Edward I. in memory of his wife Queen Eleanor, who was brought from Nottinghamshire to Westminster Abbey. An Equestrian Statute of Charles I. now probably occupies the site of the old Cross. The statue, preserved throughout the Rebellion, was erected in 1674. |
