Fleet Prison

Fleet Prison stood on the east side of Farringdon Street; was pulled down in 1846. This was a most interesting prison, on account of the many eminent persons confined there; many of whom died there. As clergymen were often sent there for debt, they used to marry persons in the Chapel attached, without license or other usual formalities, and such marriages were legally binding. This was stopped in 1711 ; but after this the marriages took place in taverns near, but this scandal was stopped in 2774.
