Hampton Court Palace


Hampton Court Palace This splendid Palace was built by Cardinal Wolsey in 1515, and afterwards presented to King Henry Viii. in 1526, and was probably not a very willing present.

But was done to try and keep friends with the King. Henry Viii. Who passed a good deal of his time at the Palace. Here Edward Vi. was born, and Jane Seymour died and here the King was married to his sixth wife, Katherine Parr.

It was a favourite residence of Charles I. and Cromwell. William Iii. considerably enlarged and altered the Palace, and had the gardens and park laid out as they now appear.

Its last royal occupant was George Ii. The State Apartments, Picture Galleries, Gardens, Maze, and large Grape. vine, are well worth seeing. Bushey Park is also near, with its splendid avenue of chestnut trees.

The Palace is open to the public free every day, except Fridays and Christmas day. Visitors can go by Rail from Waterloo Station, also by Steamboat, bus, etc.
