Leicester Square


Leicester Square Dates from 1635, when the first house was built by Robert Sydney, Earl of Leicester. At No. 47, Sir Joshua Reynolds used to live; and on the opposite side, close to the Alhambra, Hogarth spent some of the best years of his life. John Hunter and Sir Isaac Newton also lived here. The Alhambra was rebuilt and reopened in 1883. The Empire is a new and very handsome music hall. Leicester Square was cleared of rubbish and planted with flower. beds and ornamented with a fountain, seats, etc. , at the expense of the late Mr. Albert Grant.
