London Central Meat Market

London Central Meat Market Smithfield. this building, designed by Sir Horace Jones, covers 3 acres, and is the great centre for the distribution of meat to the Metropolis. It is a busy sight on Friday morning especially, when carriers from all parts of London are to be seen loading their carts for the different suburbs. In addition there are also later constructed buildings for Poultry, Pork, Fruit, Vegetables, and Fish in same style, and it is to the credit of the City Corporation and to their architect that so fine a series of Markets has been provided. The Cattle Market is at Islington, and the Foreign Cattle Market at Deptford. It was at Smithfield that Bartholomew's Fair used to be held, and it was here also, in times of religious persecution, that many martyrs were burnt at the stake.
