National Gallery


National Gallery (the), Trafalgar Square. the National Collection of Pictures is situated on the northern side of the square; is open to the public free daily (excepting Thursday arid Friday). from 10 to 4 or 7, according to time of year; Sundays open at 2.

The front view of the building is not considered worthy of its position or of the large collection of pictures with in. The number of painting exceeds 1,400, some by gift and others purchased by the nation.

One picture by Raphael was purchased from the late Duke of Marlborough for £70,000. The Italian Schools occupy a large proportion of the building, while the Dutch, Spanish, French, and German Schools are all represented. The Old British School includes the paintings bequeathed to it by J. H. W. Turner in 1856
