Newgate

About Newgate

Newgate was a prison situated in the Old Bailey at the corner of Newgate Street. Built in 1770 on the site of an older prison it was a strong gloomy building of granite and was ultimately used as a place of detention for untried prisoners and for those condemned to death. Executions used to take place there in public, but after 1868 inside the prison. Newgate Prison which was demolished in 1904.
