About Peter Ackroyd
No London website would be complete without mentioning the contemporary London historian and author Peter Ackroyd. In our opinion Ackroyd's books on London are the greatest ever written.
He has researched and written extensively on London and its history and in 2004 produced an absolutely outstanding series of three programmes on the history of London which was shown on BBC 2.
Unfortunately it seems the programmes are have not been released on DVD or video. If anyone knows a way of obtaining these programmes, we would sincerely appreciate it if you let us know using our contact form.
Ackroyd has written a number of books which are available. In particular Illustrated London and London The Biography are both excellent accounts of London's evolution over the centuries and are written in the highly enthralling style which is Peter's hallmark.
Illustrated London is London in pictures - photographs, paintings and old maps - with commentary by Ackroyd.
