Mozart's Die Zauberflöte is always a favourite among operas, its magic weaving through not just the plot, but the music. In David McVicar's wonderful staging for The Royal Opera, the comedy and pathos, the twists of the plot and the strong characterizations all combine beautifully, while John Macfarlane's elegantly dark designs heighten the Enlightenment symbolism of a thoughtful and evocative interpretation.

The story begins as young prince Tamino battles a monster; when three ladies intervene to save him he is set on a quest that tests his nerve and character, but which ultimately wins him the hand of Pamina. Accompanying him is Papageno the birdcatcher, a comic sidekick with trials of his own to overcome on the way to finding his perfect wife, Papagena. Mozart was at his most kaleidoscopic in the music: the lyricism of the high-born young lovers and the catchy tunes of the comic couple find even further contrast in the resonant invocations of Sarastro, the Priest of the Sun, and the dazzling coloratura flights of his adversary, the Queen of the Night. The double casting for this revival includes an exciting line-up of returns to the production alongside new appearances, and the acclaimed young conductor Roland Böer conducts for what will be a musical feast for an ever-popular Mozart opera.
