Alex Wilson's Mali Latino

Event location: Jazz Café. Ongoing event.

The idea for Mali Latino is the brainchild of master kora player Madou Sidiki Diabaté (brother of Toumani Diabaté) and pianist Alex Wilson.

In 2004, while on the road Madou and Alex struck up an instant connection and decided to cement the musical encounter by recording a track together.

Madou then returned to Mali but the two remained in contact.  Skipping four years ahead, Alex was offered a residency at the prestigious Aldeburgh Music, founded by Benjamin Britten and it was there that Mali Latino was born.

Alex visited Mali in February 2008 and Madou introduced him to multi-instrumentalist Ahmed Fofana.  Alex was struck by Ahmed's virtuosity, musicality and openness and they all agreed that he would be ideal to co-lead the project.

In September of 2008, the three found themselves in the Suffolk countryside  and an intense week followed where fifteen song ideas were penned and a recital to a rapturous audience.

The 9-piece band have just recorded their first album at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios.

Expect fiery latin percussion mixed with the driving village rhythms of Mali, the virtuosic kora and piano of Madou and Alex and the intense combination of mandingue and Cuban vocals.
