ARTIVIST 2010
Vultures Have Wings U (short film), directed by Andre Rangal
Anything can be recycled. Apart from trash; ideas, actions and destinies can be adapted to a new reality. This is how a community from Brazil faces the damages caused by waste disposal, which is slowly destroying the source of their survival: the mangrove swamp. Vultures Have Wings portrays how the new generations are changing their future through inspiring actions, proving that, with teamwork and ecological conscience, it is possible to overcome limitations and set sail for new horizons.
Belonging PG (documentary film), directed by Gerard Ungerman
Directed by Gerard Ungerman and Audrey Brohy and narrated by Dustin Hoffman, the Inuit-inflected Belonging leavens its informational load and scarifying message with dazzling shots of the Canadian Arctic and, ultimately, a very hopeful message. It serves as a primer on both how we got into this mess and what we can do about getting out of it. Not just science, but religion too, can be brought to bear to open our eyes and strengthen our resolve. The more natural resources are consumed, the more the human population explodes, increasing the need for more resources. This Catch-22 has resulted in massive numbers of species extinctions, dead zones in the ocean that are increasing in size and number every year, and more horrors than most people can even bear to contemplate.
Artivist is the first international film festival dedicated to addressing human rights, children's advocacy, environmental preservation, and animal advocacy. Filmmakers from around the world unite at the annual festival to address the importance of art and advocacy in our global community. Our mission is to strengthen the voice of advocate artists " 'Artivists' " while raising public awareness of social global causes.
Since its inception in 2004, Artivist has showcased over 300 films representing more than 45 countries, reached over 20m people with its PR campaign and been endorsed by organisations such as Amnesty International, Global Green, HSUS, Prevent Child Abuse America and the United Nations. Films premiered at the festival have included Oscar-winner Born into Brothels, Oscar-nominee Super-Size Me, Fast Food Nation, Emmanuel's Gift, and Trudell. This year, Artivist proudly welcomes back for the third time Petrobras as its official community partner.
