Jenufa

Event location: London Coliseum. Ongoing event.

Jenůfa is an opera of overwhelming emotional intensity. Its gripping story of love, sacrifice and redemption explores the stigma of pregnancy out of wedlock against the backdrop of a small, claustrophobic community.

Directed by David Alden (Peter Grimes, Otello), this is the second revival of his acclaimed staging which was the winner of two Olivier Awards in 2006, including Best New Production. Alden updates the setting to an isolated 20th century industrial estate in the Eastern Bloc, giving the story a contemporary edge that makes it feel even more relevant for today's audiences.

JanaÄek's powerful and accessible score is conducted by ENO's Music Director Mark Wigglesworth. American soprano Laura Wilde makes her role debut as Jenůfa, with Michaela Martens as her stepmother the KostelniÄka. The cast also includes Peter Hoare as Jenůfa's lover Laca, ENO Harewood Artist Nicky Spence as his half-brother and rival in love Å teva, and Dame Felicity Palmer as Grandmother Buryja.
