Travel Insurance
You have two main choices when looking for travel insurance: Annual insurance, which covers a maximum number of days away over the whole year for a single fee, and Single Trip insurance, which is taken out to cover a one-off journey.
The former is most commonly used by frequent travelers (two or more trips annually) but most people use the latter when planning their holidays. Single Trip policies can be expensive when purchased direct from the travel agent selling the holiday, so it is well worth looking around before you buy - there are some very cheap deals to be had.
Although there are specialist policies available for trips of a more extreme nature, most travel insurance policies are fairly similar, so it is important to make sure you get the right cover.
If traveling with children, family insurance policies are often cheaper than their individual counterparts, as is Europe-only insurance, and both will usually be flexible if you need to change your arrangements.
Insurers may attempt to sell you policies that have limits of cover of astronomical proportions, which obviously cost you more, but these are unnecessary - as long as medical costs of up to £2million and Personal Liability of up to £1 million are covered then the policy should be sufficient.
It is also important to make sure other events, such as delays, loss of possessions and even legal costs, are covered by your policy. Some higher-end credit cards have the promise of free travel insurance on offer, but these policies often don't have the kind of all-encompassing cover that you may require.
