About Bastille

Over the last few years the gastropub has become an important ingredient on the British dining plate. Great grub in comfy, wear-jeans-if-you-fancy it surroundings? Yes, please. North London's purple-walled Bastille is a fine example of this fast-emerging breed of eateries. The place feels down to earth with its old-school mismatch of well-used wooden tables and chairs, stripped wooden floors and, on each table, a stout church candle providing private lighting of sorts. In true gastropub fashion, the wine list is written up on chalk boards. The menu, meanwhile, serves up Modern European goodies such as Scottish mussels, rack of lamb, and ribeye steak with French fries or a sinful gratin dauphinois. Good choice for Sunday brunch and romantic evenings out (it's those candles that do it). Friendly staff.
