The most flattering hommage to a Parisian belle epoque bistro you could ever dream of finding, Balthazar started out at the top of the hip parade and has never slipped. The mile-long bar and oyster bar, the high ceilings, the stained glass, the tesserated floors all come together into a beautiful space that is packed with international celebrities and vivacious New Yorkers. The later it gets, the more like a party it feels. Classic bistro fare is brilliantly prepared and presented, along with more inventive dishes. Try starter of seafood ceviche or one of the plates of fruits de mer for sharing, then move on to main course of simply divine steak frites or duck shepherd’s pie. Open from breakfast til very late, when a lighter menu comes on stream. More than 300 French wines keep spirits up, and parties up to 15 are welcome in the main dining room.
