One reviewer called Berries ’a place of quiet excellence’, and under the stewardship of Chris Haynes, Berries does give off a glow of care and attention to detail. This is no ordinary City lunchroom. You go to the back of the wine bar, choose a bottle from the small, excellent collection of big-name wines (like Louis Latour Corton Grand Cru and Chateau Chasse-Spleen, a particular favourite). Take it to your table, where you will pay just £2.50 corkage over the shelf-price for the wine, then tuck into an all-you-can-eat buffet of quiches, salads, pates and cheeses. A sommelier is on hand to advise, if needed. The only problem will be convincing yourself to go back to work.
