Standing directly opposite the Central Criminal Court on Old Bailey, the two-bar Magpie and Stump mainly attracts local City and office workers for after-work drinks and parties. The modern lively top bar has leather sofas, background music and natural lighting, while on the lower ground there’s a traditional pub popularly hired for private functions of up 120 people. Karaoke fans can sing to their hearts content, or groups hiring the room can bring their own entertainment. Bar snacks cost from £4.99, but you might momentarily lose your appetite when you learn about the pub’s rather macabre past when it faced the infamous Newgate Gaol which housed London’s most notorious felons. Regulars would have witnessed squalid prisoners carried in open carts to their execution. Drink anyone?
