"Bypass this restaurant at all costs!"

My boyfriend and I have been to Alba twice. After a mediocre first experience we thought we'd give it another go. I wish I hadn't bothered. Where do I start? The dated decor? (Think 1980s NY 'power lunch' venue - lots of grey & white)? The hard and tasteless olives? The fact that, despite being two of only 6 people in the entire place with 3 waiting staff we (and incoming guests, we noticed) were forgotten by the waiter until we reminded him we needed to order?

My lamb was chewy and fatty and the tagliatelle seemed like it was straight out of a packet. The problem with the menu is that it is not Italian cuisine at all. I don't quite know what it is but I could have knocked up better food at home. The apple tart was hard and dry, the ice-cream icy rather than creamy.

The only redeeming feature was the wine list which was full of excellent Italian varieties. But at a price and this is not reason enough to go.

3 courses and wine came in at £160. That is including 12.5% service charge I did not feel they deserved. Take my advice. Bypass Alba and go to The Zetter on Clerkenwell Road instead. It is 100% better and then some.
