"Sarsaparilla in The Antipodes"
A review of Baldwins Sarsaparilla Ltd by Tony Freshwater - Saturday 25th of April 2009
As a youngster, brought up in Walthamstow E17, the treat was a walk "dahn the 'igh St", stopping at the stall selling the sarsaparilla (whether run by Balwin's or not I never knew but wd like to know)for a refreshing drink. Ambient temp in the Summer and lovely and hot during the Winter. Having lived in NZ since 1962, I have have had several trips back which always entailed the old routine, bringing back several bottles to NZ to enjoy here. Unfortunately I cdnt find the stall on the last trip in '97 but then, so much has changed not only "dahn the 'igh St" but in W-stow in particular and London in general. I have tried many NZ and Aussie Sarsaparillas but NONE come close to the exotic taste of Balwin's. Long may they continue so I can at least soon renew my association, even if it means a sojourn fm E17 to SE17
