"I left, full of Wonder..."A review of Wonder Cafe & Grill by Mick the man - Tuesday 16th of January 2007Advertisements
Wonder Cafe is a typical English cafe - nothing more, nothing less. It's a quirky looking place on the Uxbridge Road, near Hayes (outer West London), completely detached from any other shops with a car park, which is handy, although it's usually home to an Ambulance and/or the odd Police car, or conspicuous Jaguar... On entering there is a little window where you place your order. There are lots of prices, etc., dotted around. If you look up you'll see some photos, mostly of breakfasts fit for a body builder. One in particular stands out - The Bunter. This consists of just about every imaginable staple breakfast option, including a bit of bubble. I did order this once - it was huge! The staff don't mess around, but they are considerate and friendly. The bottom line is, you can order almost any breakfast, whatever comes to mind, and once you've paid and sat down it will appear in front of you in no time at all. The seating area is comfortable, and no-frills. They also have a TV up on the wall, I think that's worth mentioning. I didn't have coffee, but I've seen the coffee and it does look inviting! More so than the tea. That said, the tea is fine - as good as it should be, which means it's a world away from any of your chain restaurants. The food is typical English cafe fare. Not the most expensive Sausages and Eggs, but nicely cooked. You can't really fault it. Everything is served on mix-matched plates, it's almost like being in someone's slightly grubby kitchen. When I went, it wasn't smokey, which is good. I think the customers are locals, workmen, Police, hospital workers (it's not far from Hillingdon Hospital). If you're near Hayes and fancy a 'greasy spoon', then Wonder Cafe fits the bill. |
