Re Irene Alexandra Horton.Somewhere I have a photograph of my mother in her traditional uniform, including frilly white apron, with her friend. They were joint headgirls during 1916

That was the end of her formal education. Unable to go to grammar school she left at fourteen to work making bandaliers. Even having taken a scholarship there were insufficient funds for both her and her brother Harry to continue and since he was the boy his education continued.

Her head at the time, one Miss Eichner, was annoyed when she realised my mother had deliberately failed hers rather then make her parents feel awkward.

At the time the family lived at the top of the school since my grandfather was the caretaker. Never the less she was always late for school!

There are afew a necdotes with which she regaled me

Should you be interested I could pass them on.

Her brief education meant she was adamant my sistr and I should have all possible opportunities.

Strangely we both became teachers. .
