"Welcome Home to The Clerkenwell Kitchen"
A review of The Clerkenwell Kitchen by Anonymous - Monday 16th of October 2006
If you're looking for a restaurant that gives you that "back to basics" feel, then The Clerkenwell Kitchen is the place for you. The ingredients (if not grown right outside on the terrace!) are purchased direct from suppliers who are chosen for their product’s home-grown freshness. The menu is driven by flavour and the ingredients always follow the simplest, straightest journey from source to plate. They plan their menus the way a good home cook plans the week – progressing flavours and ingredients through dishes across the days. There’s always a good soup on the stove, a great roast in the oven, a flan or tart to be served warm, cold selection of meats, pates or fish (all with home made relish), fresh salads on the side and a daily dish that’s inspired by what the suppliers had to offer that morning. The menu is not long, but every dish is special because it is straightforward and lets ingredients do their work. There is a thriftiness in the preparation and the selection of dishes, but never in the flavour. A fine selection of wines and cider follows the philosophy – a simple choice, but surprising quality. The final nice surprise will be the bill. Your soup will be under a fiver. Two Courses will leave you change from £25. A three-course meal with wine might cost £40.
