Devonshire Square


Bishopsgate. (EC2) Named from the Earls of Devonshire having lived here in a mansion previously possessed by the Earl of Oxford. Here Murray and Dockwra set up the Penny Post in 1680. Murray also introduced the Club of Commerce (one of a trade) ; and at Devonshire House he opened a Bank of Credit, where money-bills were advanced upon goods deposited.
