Hampstead Heath

(NW1) Charles Dickens often used to ride out here of a week-end to "Jack Straw's Castle." This is a noted hostelry named after the house of Jack Straw, second in command of Wat Tyler's rioters. Jack Straw was hanged at Smithfield, and confessed before his execution that it had been resolved by the leaders of the insurrection to sack and burn the City of London.
