(N5) This was originally a summer camp of the Romans. The Manor was given to the Priory of St. John of Jerusalem between 1271 and 1286, and was the Lord Prior's country residence, destroyed by Jack Straw in 1371. (Reference: Timbs's Curiosities of London, p. 477)
