Spitalfields

(E1) . Derives its name from the priory of St. Mary Spital, founded in 1197. On the old Spital fields are now a number of streets, lanes, and alleys (at one time) principally inhabited by the artisans employed in the silk manufactures which rendered the name of this district so famous.
