(EC1) Here is one of the Royal Hospitals of the City and the first institution of the kind established in the metropolis, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, now approaching the eight hundredth anniversary of its foundation. It was originally a portion of the Priory of St. Bartholomew, founded by Rahere in 1102. (Reference: Timbs's Curiosities of London, p. 36)
