London in the Late 20th Century

Previous page: Housing Crisis after the Blitz

Swathes of London fell into dereliction due to the decline of London's Docklands area. The docks could no longer accommodate the modern container ships, so business and labour migrated away to Essex. By the late 1980's plans were afoot to completely regenerate this area, and not long after, the Canary Wharf complex was constructed and has since flourished.

London continued to expand following the war and by 1965 there were 32 London Boroughs. The London County Council was abolished to make way for the Greater London Council (GLC) which was charged with overseeing the administration of the boroughs. By 1985, the GLC was dissolved and all power fell to the individual boroughs. Once again, this was altered and in 2000 a London Assembly was created.

The most significant change at this time was the creation of the Mayor's post. The first Mayor of London was Ken Livingstone who was elected on 4th May 2000.
