363 Old Kent Road was, between 1890 and 1910, the site of the Camberwell Bacteriological Research Laboratory - begun by Edward Collins Bousfield MRCS LRCP DPH. It was to become the central research labs from which Bousfield was contracted by Camberwell Borough Council in its drive against Diphtheria and other diseases. In 1886, when the lease for old premises were purchased by Bousfield from the former occupier - Dr Palmer - the asking price was £2000!

(£800 deposit, with the remainder payable over the next three years). This money was paid by Dr Bousfield's father, Edward Tenney Bousfield of Bedford, and repaid out of the profits of the practice over a number of years. Dr Bousfield's first years income was £500..
