"Kindergarten punishment for 5year olds"

I began in the kindergarten at Holy Family Convent Enfield in September 1952. I have very strong memories of Sister Scolastica and her nun's flowing black gown. We learnt everything by rote and I did well. The only problem was my mother was dying and finally passed away in the Spring of the following year. I became very naughty and was constantly punished by having to sit on the MAT at the back of the room in full view of everyone in the playground.

Having been a primary school teacher and raised three children of my own I am sure this was not the right treatment for me at the time. Bereavement counselling would be the route now!

I stayed til I was 11 and went to St Angela's Grammar in Wood Green..
