In 1934 the Labour Party won control of the LCC for the first time. The Labour Party would dominate the council until its abolition and replacement by the GLC in 1965.

During the 1930s, politically extreme parties had a brief period where they flourished. The Communist Party of Great Britain managed to win a seat in parliament and the far-right British Union of Fascists received extensive support.

Ultimately, neither of these parties could develop their power base or influence and as London and Great Britain faced up to the prospect of a second World War, Neville Chamberlain's Conservative Party was in Government, to be replaced by a National Government led by Winston Churchill.
