Edward Osborne

Previous page: Eustace Budgell

A tale with a happier ending is that of Edward Osborne, who in 1536 leapt into the Thames from the window of one of the Bridge houses to save his master's infant daughter after she had been dropped by a nursemaid into the stream. The father, Sir William Hewet, became Lord Mayor in 1559, and gave this daughter in marriage to Osborne, whose great-grandson became the first Duke of Leeds.
