In 1428, during a period when Castle Baynard was most likely another forfeiture and a part of the Royal possessions, the castle was almost entirely destroyed by fire. It was soon after granted to and rebuilt by Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, for his own residence.

It was in this castle that the Council assembled which proclaimed the Earl of March King, under the title of Edward IV; and here also his luckless boy was proclaimed Edward V.
