" Civil Rights threatened in Mato Grosso"
A review of Brazilian Consulate General by Robin neville - Tuesday 11th of September 2007
I wish to draw attention to the threats facing indigenous people, their supporters and foreign journalists in Matto Grosso, where a group from OPAN ( Operacao Amazonica Nativa), Greenpeace, and some (French) journalists were recently threatened and prevented from entering the lands of the Enawene Nawe, in the north of the state of Matto Grosso. The indians had invited this group to assisst them in making assements of the impact of local farmers who have, allegedly, taken over large tracts of their historical land. They were threatened , harassed and eventually( after being besieged in their hotel overnight) forced to leave, by a combination of local politicians, farmers, and with the connivance of the local police.I appeal to the Brazilian Consulate here in Britain and the relevant civil authorities here and in Brazil,, to restore civil rights in Matto Grosso, and allow the free passage of these people, to assisst the Enawene Nawe in protecting their land.
