Featherstone Street

City Road. (EC1) Origin of the name unknown, but probably from a family so called. Here, however, the eccentric James Lackington, bookseller, kept shop. Mr. Lackington had a wondrous good opinion of himself, as will be seen from his Memoirs, written by himself, with a triple Dedication: (I) To the Public. (2) To Respectable Booksellers. (3) To Sordid Booksellers. Under an engraving of himself appears the following: "Who a few years since, began Business with five pounds; now sells one Hundred Thousand Volumes Annually."
