St. Johns Gate

Clerkenwell. (EC1) Formerly a gate of the ancient Priory of St. John of Jerusalem. Except this gate and the Norman crypt in the adjoining Church of St. John, nothing is now left of the ancient monastery. In a room over the archway Dr. Johnson worked for Cave, the founder and proprietor of The Gentleman's Magazine, which was first published here.
