St. Johns Street

Finsbury, West Smithfield. (EC1) Here stood the ancient Hospital or Priory of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. To the left of John Street was the "Red Bull" Theatre, the arena where, during the reign of the Puritans, the persecuted players occasionally ventured to perform, and when they were not infrequently dragged to prison. At the " Cross Keys " Inn in this street the unfortunate Richard Savage occasionally passed his social hours. (Reference: Jesse's London, vol. III, pp. 63-74)
