Tottenham Court Road

(W1) So called from the prebendal manor of Toten-Hall at its north-west extremity, which was the ancient court-house of that manor, and subsequently a place of public amusement, tea-gardens, etc. (Reference: Timbs's Curiosities of London, p. 18) On the west side is the chapel in which George Whitefield, the founder of the Methodists, used to preach. Here, under the north gallery, lie the remains of the eminent sculptor John Bacon. (Reference: Jesse's London, vol. I, p. 332)
