Wandsworth

Is so named from the Wandle. This river, which rises near Croydon, passes through Wandsworth into the Thames under a bridge. Izaak Walton, in his Compleat Angler, mentions the variety of trout found in the Wandle here as marked with marbled spots like a tortoise. (Reference: Thornbury's Old and New London, vol. vi, p. 479)
