As if the views across to Hyde Park weren't enough, Lanes' opulent interior is stunning. A glass and marble central buffet topped by an 81-element glass sculpture visually echoes both the glass artwork collection arranged in display cabinets and the stained-glass picture window borders. Chairs are purple, leather-sprung, quilted and big. Star duo executive chef Bernhard Mayer and restaurant chef Shaun Whatling have created exciting, cosmopolitan menus featuring daily seasonal specials and low-calorie alternatives. Signature starters include Diver scallops with pineapple carpaccio and sweet chilli, while traditional mains such as rack of lamb have been updated to include a baked spinach-potato tart. The Lanes classic, however, is roast rib of Blairmore beef with Yorkshire pudding. A la carte desserts are divine; the Earl Grey tea chocolate mousse is a favourite. Service is informed and truly personal.
