"The school in 1960's has it changed much?"

A review of Walworth Lower Secondary School by Tim Atkins written on Wednesday 10th of June 2020

I am now 70 and recall happy memories of Walworth school.

1961-1962 Mina road, 1962-1963 Lower school, 1963-1966 Upper school.

My time there helped me find my way in the world and make a reasonable living. I was not the best academic and my spelling let me down in English lessons. Punctuation still puzzles me at times too! There were aspects of social studies which I enjoyed but my leaning was towards mathematics, technical drawing with Mr Ash "The Major" woodwork with Mr Greshack and metalwork with Mr Strait. I think I may have also had some lessons with Mr Hunt and Mr Cortineau. I did not excel at team sports but was prepared to "have a go!" I was though, not bad at shot put.

Looking back I think the broad range of backgrounds and experiences of the attendees from a wide range of homes where parents worked in social, domestic, technical, construction and professional occupations enabled development of communication skills to help deal with many types of people in future situations, be it social or work environs.

We did not have the luxury of a sports field nearby and for games we had to catch a coach each week to travel to a sports ground somewhere near Norwood.

I understand this response is very dated, trust I have not rambled on too much and realise this mail may be a little off the the purpose of the site by it can always be sent to the trash bin. I urge anybody who enters the school to make the best of what it offers. I have not fared too bad but believe I could have done better with the hindsight I now have..
