Finsbury (EC1) These thoroughfares take their name from an ancient spring called Godewell (i.e. Goodwell) , afterwards corrupted to Godeswell, Gosewell, and Goswell. Goswell Street probably was formed about the time that the ground was taken in for building the Carthusian Monastery, now called Charterhouse, in 1371. (Pinks's History of Clerkenwell, p. 283)
