Ecclesiastical Residents

Bishop Warburton

Bishop Warburton came from Bedford Row to live in the Square in 1757. A letter written by him to Bishop Hurd, in which he said "We have been here near a week," fixes the date and indicates his exact residence, as it is dated "Grosvenor Square, the Parkside, and the last door at the south side, February 7, 1757."

Bishop Thomas Newton

It would appear that another ecclesiastic was once, at least, staying in the Square, as a letter from the Rev. Thomas Newton (afterwards Bishop Newton) to David Garrick dated 28th December 1741 is headed Grosvenor Square. In it, Newton remarks that he is "to thank you in the name of our company for our entertainment last Wednesday," which refers to a performance of Richard III by Garrick.
